To follow my route follow this link.

I started around 8 am and left the hut. The weather wasn’t beautiful as I expected but the barometer went up during the night. It snowed this night leaving a white blanket on summits around. To reach Lower Wairaki Hut I had 13 kilometres to walk with an eight hours estimation walking. I crossed Aparima River by a swing bridge and walked through a swamp following marker poles until reaching the forest. The walk through this beech forest and fern field wasn’t easy going but really beautiful. Sometime I crossed area covered by a thin snow layer and had to ford some creeks flooded. After 5 hours walking I finally reached the Waikari River that I forded getting my feet wet. I got to the hut and lit a fire to dry my clothes out. I’m going to spend the night here and tomorrow head to Telford Campsite and maybe further.
