I took a rest day yesterday, I used it to get some informations about the Tongariro crossing which is half way closed and the Whanganui River to book a canoe. Tania at the information centre was so helpful and gave me some invaluable informations.
I left the motel where I was staying early in the morning. I walked on the shoulder of SH4 for 20 kilometres. On my way, I bought a home made breakfast in a petrol station running by Jesse, Jamie and the little Amelia, a really nice team. Then I kept going for several hours under the hit and reached Owhango where I had a lunch-dinner at the Café 39 South running by two lovely girls Carolyn and Opal. Opal gave me chilled water to fill my water bag, I felt great meeting nice and helpful people. Much later I set off again taking the 42nd Traverse, a large 4 wheel drive track going through the Tongariro Forest. I reached the Mako Stream and pitch my tent near by the track.
